21. BACKGROUND STORY
Spoiler
Carlos Cruz is a male born in the United States whose mother was born in Mexico while his father is from America. When Carlos was sixteen years old, he lost his mother to a drive-by shooting that occurred on Santa Ana Street. That night was a tragedy for Carlos and it would change his life forever. Carlos is now on a mission to help find justice for his mother and to end the violence that has taken many families from his community through violence. Ever since his mum died, things got bad for Carlos at school – he wasn’t doing good anymore. It got rough at home too, cause his dad started drinking lots of alcohol to deal with losing his wife, and then ended up emotionally abusing poor Carlos. So Carlos became really withdrawn from people and could hardly pay attention or concentrate in class either. Even though it all sucked, Carlos didn’t want to let anger and pain rule the rest of his life. He decided not to give in but instead turned his struggles into something that would motivate him to become better — that is, both mentally and physically. He established a workout routine, committed himself to study criminal justice in addition to developing discipline and responsibility. Carols heard gun shots on a daily basis in the nigga hood he grew up in, particularly at night. After seeing so much violence firsthand, Carlos was able to see that a great number of innocent families had to live in fear, and he set out to change that for the better. Carlos opted to join the Los Santos Sheriff's Department (LSSD) over the Los Santos Police Department (LSPD) simply due to his belief that the LSSD was a stronger proponent of community values than the LSPD and also maintained a stronger connection with local neighborhoods. He respected the departments mission to protect the county communities, assist its residents in need, and maintain law & order in communities that have been subjected to high amounts of criminal/gang activity. Carlos believed that by joining the Sheriff's Department, he would have an opportunity to earn the trust of the community and positively impact the lives of others who share similar experiences to those he had growing up. Regardless of his rough upbringing and life circumstance, Carlos was really focused on reaching his dream of graduating from school. He held on tight to all that his mom had taught him while working hard to finish school, and he was not going to let being poor stand in the way of him getting an education. After graduating high school, Carlos applied to the Sheriff's Academy with hopes of becoming a Deputy Sheriff so he could make a positive impact on his community by helping create safer neighborhoods and do whatever he could to make sure no other family would have to go through what he went through. Carlos experiences the loss his mother left behind everyday but rather than allow this experience to negatively impact his life, he has chosen to use it as an inspiration to help others and create a positive impact in his community.
