21. BACKGROUND STORY

Nikos Baltas is a 24-year-old Greek-American kid that grew up in the neighborhoods of Idlewood in poor conditions together with his family. Being a quiet and generous kid in his young age managed to keep him out of trouble from gangs and illegal activities, even though he didn't have the money for college. He never dropped his dreams and started working at the docks until he could get some money that might be enough for some form of education higher than high school. Everything was going well until he got mugged one day by two gangs and witnessed the murder of an innocent civilian in Ganton due to a gang drive-by. That flipped the switch on him. He felt the danger and understood that this is the life of a lot of people in Los Santos, therefore he decided to join law enforcement, not only because for him it was also a good job with good money, but because he felt that he had to serve the community and protect it from anyone and anything. With the ambition to join law enforcement and help his poor family with his wage, as well as repay the "debts" that for him were the money that his parents gave for education, so even at an older age they would be able to live a better life, as well as making his parents proud too.
A little about Nikos: since he was a kid, he was getting bullied by his classmates because he was part of an immigrant family and couldn't speak fluent English. Day by day he was dreaming of becoming a cop, but his family didn't allow him to fulfill his dreams as it was seen as very dangerous, especially since he was their only child. Therefore, since Nikos' family couldn't afford sending him to college, he decided that he should join the academy after all those horrors he saw these last two years.
